Suspected serial rapist arrested

2010-11-12 07:37

A man suspected of having raped at least 12 young women since August in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal this morning, Gauteng police said.

“I can confirm that a man was arrested this morning, but I cannot comment further because only Colonel [Gerard] Labuschagne comments on the case,” said Captain Katlego Mogale.

Labuschagne earlier in the week said the man allegedly targeted young black women aged between 19 and 21 in and around the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas.

He said the man allegedly approached a group of women and invited them to celebrate his birthday with him at a nearby restaurant or bar.

The man later asked one of them to accompany him to fetch his sister or a friend, taking a metered-taxi into Hillbrow or central Johannesburg.

Here he allegedly lured his victim to a hotel room under the pretext of fetching his sister or the friend, or his luggage, then raped her.

He allegedly also tied some of them up and has had a firearm with him on one occasion.

The woman frees herself when he leaves, saying he is going to fetch money or food.

The most recent rape was reported last week.
