Sutcliffe laughs off rumour of arrest

2011-06-20 09:11

Durban city manager Mike Sutcliffe laughed at gossip that he had been arrested, the Independent Online reported today.

Sutcliffe sniggered before turning deadly serious: “I don’t even comment on such rumours. This is just silly.”

The Tribune received an anonymous phone call on Saturday asking whether it was true that Sutcliffe had been arrested. No more information was provided.

Reporters immediately called the police, city council and various political parties. Some laughed at the suggestion while others admitted to hearing the rumours but also had scant information.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Phindile Radebe was bewildered.

“This is something I would definitely have heard about,” she said.

Saturday was not the first time Sutcliffe has been the subject of arrest speculation.

In March, newspaper reports claimed that the Hawks were poised to arrest Sutcliffe and other city officials within days, amid investigations into alleged tender corruption at the council.

Those arrests never happened and Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela at the time denied there were any pending arrests.
