TED talks to achieve your #2015dream

2015-01-09 16:45

At this time of the year there is nothing better than hearing some words to get you through the first weeks. This is especially true for strangers who will tell you deep things about all the aspects of your life that you want to change but have no idea how. Enter the mighty TEDx talks - the organisation that invests in ideas worth sharing. It is a collection of dynamic videos of speakers who get together with diverse audiences and start conversations and discussions about a wide range of subjects and themes. It’s a simple, but valuable idea.

Here are five talks that will equip you with some powerful tools this year.

Sir Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity?

This week we have been bombarded by a range of experts on education telling us what went wrong with yet another class of matriculants and our shoddy education system. Unfortunately it is not something that you haven’t heard before. Neither is this talk to be honest, but it’s worth a listen. It is relevant if you are a parent wanting the best for your child, it is reassuring if you are a student who feels that you are just not making the cut and it certainly explains a lot about the work place and why you may be struggling to be the innovative go-getter you once were.

Sheryl Sandberg: Why we have too few women leaders

So the subject of woman leaders may seem over worked (and under paid) but the reality is that the same is true for women around the world who can’t seem to make their mark. Sheryl Sandberg, author of acclaimed book Lean In, explains firstly why we still have too few leaders and second what to do about it. This talk is not just for women though, men can learn a lot from this in terms of dealing with women that they work with. It’s a cause which requires everyone to get involved, so sit and watch. You will definitely walk away feeling ready to become the super woman you were born to be.

Want to sound like a leader? Start by saying your name right | Laura Sicola | TEDxPenn

If you only plan on watching one of these motivational stories, then make it this one. Communication expert, Dr Laura Sicola, delivers some hard-hitting truths about the way in which you are presenting yourself and why you are not doing it in a way that demands attention. This doesn’t require you to go and buy things or become someone else, but it will change the way in which people view you in the working world, for the better. This is not just for introverts because it is not about how loud or obnoxious you can become but rather how to use your words and tone in a way that will make you the best you.

Breaking the language barrier | Tim Doner | TEDxTeen 2014

Tim Doner, who has mastered over 20 languages, offers some useful tips on how to start to unpack languages and make learning them a lot less daunting. The talk is not a language class though, far from it in fact. Doner shares the economy of language and what it can achieve. In a country with eleven official languages, it can be overwhelming to wrap your head around them all.

Make Love Not Porn: Cindy Gallop at TEDxOxford

In this talk Cindy Gallop, founder of IfWeRanTheWorld and MakeLoveNotPorn companies, explores the idea of socialising sex. She is frank and unapologetic about the subject and says all the things that you want to say but are just too afraid to say them. If you’re looking to liberate yourself in the bedroom, build some confidence, start a hot debate or are looking for healthy information on sex, then this one is for you.
