TS galaxy loses star ... again

2011-09-03 18:04

Hitmaker record company TS Records has just lost yet another star from its stable.

The label, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is widely admired for turning unknown or little-known artists into superstars, but its downfall seems to be that it struggles to retain them.

The latest A-list musicians to turn their backs on the hit-makers are hip-hop maestro Pro, formerly known as Prokid, and kwaito bad boy Brickz. The Dankie San rapper said this week he was no longer with TS Records, owned by celebrity DJ Sbu Leope and TK Nciza.

He joins the list of multiaward-winning artists Ntando and Brown Dash, who left in 2007.

Unlike those two, though – who intimated bad business practice on the parts of Leope and Nciza – Pro was quick to point out that there was no bad blood between him and the company.

“It was a mutual under-standing that I wanted to grow, learn the music business and finally do my own thing,” Pro said.

In another blow to TS, Brickz – who hasn’t had a hit since his drugs and rock star lifestyle led to his arrest a few years ago – said he would be releasing an album under another label but that TS was funding it.

Leope and Nciza also lost former dancers and kwaito group Izinyoka, who have since left the music business.

Leope said: “It’s business. People come and go, and if it’s growth that makes them leave it’s always a good thing.

“Pro did mention he wanted to do his own thing and Brickz is a little undecided.

He said he was going the same route as Pro but he’s not sure.

“Although, nginokuthuka (I fear) they might not make it out there, I wish them the best of luck.”
