TV Guide: Award Season

2012-01-20 15:06

Award season is now in full swing. What else do we have to look forwad to?

What: Academy Awards
When: February 26
Where: Kodak Theatre,Los Angeles

The grandaddy of awards, the Oscars are the be-all and end-all of Hollywood. Everyone and their entourage wants to be in Hollywood for this one. There’s glamour, golden statuettes and grandstanding galore. And fortunately for the rest of us, we get to watch it live on the small screen.

What: Screen Actors Guild Awards
When: January 29
Where: Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center

This is one of the shows we don’t get to see on SA television, but is just as crucial in the run-up to the Oscars as the Golden Globes. Here, actors get to be awarded by their fellow thespians. Stars such as Brad Pitt have stated how being recognised by fellow actors is more fulfilling than getting an Oscar.

What: British Academy of Film and Television Arts
When: February 12
Where: Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in London

While Hollywood remains the biggest cinema movement in the world, it has come to represent global cinema instead of just American. And British stars have been up there with the rest of the A-listers. The Baftas recognise the best in British talent that has made it beyond the UK’s borders.

What: Grammy Awards
When: February 12
Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles

This is music’s biggest night – and Adele is tipped to shove Lady Gaga out of the way. The raspy-voice lass has been picked to take the coveted album and record of the year for Rolling in the Deep and 21, as well as song of the year for Rolling in the Deep. She has six nominations. Only Kanye West has more with seven.

What: Golden Raspberry Awards
When: February 25
Where: TBA

Not everyone cares for the back-slapping, air-kissing chi-chiness of award season – which is why there’s the Razzies. The spoof awards have been “incinerating cinematic sins for over three decades”. Some of Hollywood’s A-list such as Halle Berry, Charlize Theron and Sandra Bullock have been good sports, accepting awards in person.
