TV guide: Can Kutcher fill Sheen’s shoes?

2011-05-26 12:53

When it was recently announced that Ashton Kutcher was joining the cast of Two and a Half Men, cyberspace went crazy.

Well, maybe mostly because Kutcher is a Twitter-happy actor who always feels the need to share the details of his life. Still, this was big news.

For a while there was hope, mostly on Charlie Sheen’s side, that the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, would rehire him. But Sheen’s warlock dreams were dealt a blow by the 33-year-old Kutcher’s addition.

It’s rumoured that Kutcher will earn less than Sheen’s $2 million salary per episode. And true to his tiger-blood ways, Sheen made dire predictions about the show’s future ratings, mockingly calling Kutcher a “brilliant comedic performer” and a “sweetheart” before pointing out: “Oh wait, so am I!”

Still, Sheen might have a point. Will Kutcher’s pretty face and acting chops be able to take over from the haggard, often hungover face fans are used to seeing in the Sheen character?

Kutcher is no stranger to TV sitcoms after he cut his teeth on That 70s Show. After that he produced a prank show on MTV, Punk’d, before taking on the silver screen to star in various movies.

On screen, he’s often portrayed as a goofy, go-lucky, all-American character, which is the opposite of the alcoholic, womanising, ugly-shirt-wearing Uncle Charlie from Two and Half Men.

In a statement from CBS and Warner Brothers, Kutcher said: “I can’t replace Charlie Sheen, but I’m going to work my ass off to entertain the hell out
of people.”

It’s believed the producers turned to Kutcher after Hugh Grant turned them down. Other actors that were considered for the role included Rob Lowe, John Stamos and Jeremy Piven, who are all over 40, like Sheen.

We think the producers could have searched harder, and we fancy these possibilities too:

Robert Downey Jr
This former substance abuser is a great actor. He has reached a point in his career where everything he appears in turns into a hit.

Johnny Depp
He’s hot, he’s funny (think Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean) and if you get a dictionary and look under “hedonistic”, his face is there.

Bruce Willis
Kutcher’s predecessor in marriage to Demi Moore, Willis is a man who can pull off the brooding, boozy role. He was very convincing in his alcoholic characters in the movies 16 Blocks and Bonfire of the Vanities.

Patrick Dempsey
If a character is going to be a womaniser, at least let him look like McDreamy. Dempsey is a TV veteran with a funny bone. His face alone would have been enough to help viewers forget all about Sheen.
