TV guide: Keep the real, make it original

2011-04-08 13:09

After years of being told “You watch too much TV” I have finally had enough. Lately I am struggling to find anything worth making my eyes square.

Bored to Death – ironically one of the few decent shows left on TV – that’s exactly how I feel.

Let’s start with the folk at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. After giving Grey’s Anatomy, which used to have perfect comedic timing, several episodes to recover from the horrendous mass-shooting, I’m resigned to the fact that the medical drama will never be the same again.

Dr Shepherd and Meredith Grey’s neuroses, Callie and Arizona’s relationship issues and Dr Altman’s long face (no really, her face is abnormally long) are all just plain boring.

Where’s the wit? Where are the people flying off the handle and jumping to conclusions? The stuff that used to make Monday nights my “leave-me-alone-don’t-bother-me-or-I’ll-kill-you night”?

Desperate Housewives has also been given leeway to get it right, yet Paul Young continues to be a focal point of the series. It would appear that the producers outdid themselves with the plane crash at the end of last season and are still recovering.

Now some of you TV heads may be screaming at me about the plethora of reality TV at my disposal. I couldn’t be bothered.

No longer are those “situational drama” shows interesting. They follow the same premise and really how many Kardashian spin-offs is one person expected to endure?

Whether it’s Kendra or Nonhle it’s become formulaic; structured around what gets the subject’s emotions up or down and then edited and re-edited in such a way that it’s meant to entice me? It doesn’t.

Even shows like Survivor or So You Think You Can Dance have lost their lustre. The contestants are typecast.

Reality TV represents the dearth of creativity it would seem because it is cheap and follows the TV-by-numbers formula and has become default programming.

Even the more original ones like Cake Boss and LA Ink have lost their flair – we get it – Buddy can make cakes that can rocket to the moon and Kat Von D can do amazing portraits, but so what?

I am tired of having to ingest mounds of Americana that doesn’t appeal to me every week.

Locally, I have been watching Intersexions attentively, which is so mind-bogglingly cool I struggle to comprehend what dreck SABC1 may replace it with when the season ended last Tuesday. Please not a reality TV show.

Bring something original where the storyline hasn’t fizzled out two seasons ago, yet the series is still clutching on for dear life.

The only glimmers of entertainment out there are the likes of American Idols which has re-invented itself this year making for interesting viewing, while Gossip Girl has introduced new characters to thicken the plot. Shows like Fashion Police will forever captivate me for the pure talent of Joan Rivers while I can’t wait for the new season of Glee to start in June.

Real re-invention, new faces, a modicum of wit and original programming is what I look for with little success as I sift through 100 channels daily. Someone... anyone do something about it.
