TV guide: Mel B’s scary world

2010-11-13 08:26

Between a come back tour, recording a fitness DVD and a paternity battle, former Spice Girl, Mel B, still managed to snag her own reality TV show. While the show may not be much different to any one of the other vacuous concepts on telly, Mel B often puts her money where her mouth is.

Why she made a reality show:

“Everyone has an opinion about my marriage, and that’s one of the reasons Stephen (Belafonte, her husband) and I decided to make our reality.”

What makes her show different from others:

“When people see it, they will eat their words.”

Getting married while fighting a paternity battle:

“Stephen’s been my best friend for eight years, so him joining my family when we got married three years ago felt like a natural progression. He knows everything about me, which is sometimes good, and sometimes bad.”

Her kids’ reaction to their new step-father:

“My youngest daughter Angel, who’s three, calls him Dad, even though he’s not her biological father. Our three girls – Angel, my 11-year-old Phoenix, and Stephen’s daughter Giselle (6) – get on really well. But we definitely want to have a child together in the next year or so.”

Being a mother

“I love kids and I enjoy being pregnant, so I’m looking forward to extending our family. I’m lucky, I’ve always had easy pregnancies.”

Having another child:

“Hopefully we’ll have a healthy boy. Stephen is outnumbered but he loves all the attention he gets from us.”

MEL B refresher course

» She was born Melanie Brown but given the name Scary Spice by the British tabloids because of her outrageous, “in-your-face” attitude, Leeds accent, loud laugh and outlandish dress sense, which mainly consisted of animal prints.

» In 1996 Brown, along with Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Adams, shot to fame as a member of the Spice Girls with the release of “Wannabe”. The Spice Girls have been attributed for coining the term: “Girlpower.”

» In 2006, Brown became tabloid fodder due to her relationship with Hollywood funnyman Eddie Murphy. Brown gushed about how their children got along before announcing that she was pregnant with his child – three months into the relationship. Later that year at the Dreamgirls premier Murphy told a journalist: “I don’t know whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test. You shouldn’t jump to conclusions, sir.”

» September 2007, Brown joined the fifth season of the U.S. television hit Dancing with the Stars with her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. The pair was the highest scoring couple during the season and made it to the finals but they took second place.

» In 2008, Brown married longtime friend Stephen Belafonte in Egypt.
