Spoof reality show The Real Jozi A-Listers seems to be a localised version of Real Husbands of Hollywood. Despite ham-handed acting and an overreliance on lowbrow humour, it’s good for a chuckle, write Siyabonga Sithole and Thembi Dzonzi

The Real Jozi A-Listers is a localised version of Black Entertainment Television’s Real Husbands of Hollywood, which spoofed popular reality show The Real Housewives.

Comedian Tol A$$ Mo is our very own Kevin Hart, fellow comic Trevor Gumbi falls somewhere between Duane Martin and JB Smoove, model Masego “Maps” Maponyane takes on the role of Nick Cannon and musician Da L.E.S becomes our Nelly as they team up for a comical and fictionalised version of themselves.

The show is a fantastical take on what the life of a real A-lister looks like.

Tol A$$ Mo plays the orchestrator of the dynamic, bringing the men together for a hip-hop and comedy tour. Da L.E.S is the supercool rich kid and King of the North.

Maponyane is the charismatic pretty boy who is trying to shed his beauty-without-brains image and Gumbi plays the debauched friend who always gets everyone into trouble.

Gumbi stirs up problems right off the bat when he throws a lavish house party at Da L.E.S’s mum’s place, unbeknown to the homeowner.

Da L.E.S returns home to find Gumbi lying half-naked on the floor of his mother’s mansion and his microwave missing after a white neighbour confiscated it as a result of Gumbi’s naked drunkenness in front of the neighbour’s daughter.

Maponyane, being the cool boy, steps in to save the day and calms the tense situation before Da L.E.S’s mother returns.

The producers stretch the lowbrow humour a bit too far as they subject us to a half-naked Gumbi’s man boobs and out-of-shape body.

In trying to become what The Real Husbands of Hollywood is – a no-holds- barred TV experience where comic arguments and occasional physical fights and breakouts are the norm – The Real Jozi A-Listers’ unmaking is its exaggerated acting, which is amateurish, and the profanities, which get in the way of the dialogue, particularly for Da L.E.S.

When the guys are not in acting mode, they look smooth and at ease with the cameras in their faces.

The show might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if one looks beyond the stereotypical reality-show format and gets the parody, it is sure to be a winner. Tune in every week to catch a glimpse of the foursome’s hilarious antics.
