1. Chesanyama is the perfect spot when you want that traditional braai taste but don’t have time to get out the firelighters and coal.

Our order included a Meat BraaiBox (pap, relish, wors and brisket), a BraaiBox (pap, relish, chicken quarter and brisket), a Jumbo Burger with golden crispy chips, and the Easy Meal 1 with a Russian and a helping of good ol’ crispy chips.

Chesanyama’s meat is of good quality and well-prepared. Its best item is the pap and relish. The only disappointing thing is its brisket – it’s as tough as old boots.

You’d think a franchise that specialises in braai meat would be able to produce a better chop. After I’d tasted all the dishes, I’d recommend a BraaiBox with pap, relish, boerewors and chicken. – Grethe Koen

2. Sampling a variety of meals from Chesanyama was a delight, of sorts. I commend the outlet for its turnaround time, its value for money and friendly customer service.

As we worked through the menu, the main problem I came across was the steak. It’s so tough, it became a mission to slice, let alone chew. I had to use my hands to tear the meat apart (needless to say, the standard-issue plastic knife-and-fork set failed).

For me, there was nothing to relish about the watery relish. But then came the burger and the Russian and chips. The juicy pattycompletely took me by surprise. It was tender with the right amount of sauce and a soft and fresh bun. I wanted to finish it off, but my overstuffed stomach would not let me. – Siyabonga Sithole

3. The BraaiBox pap looked weird and square, but was actually okay – firm enough, cooked through and not salty.

The tomato relish was good and tasted like real gravy with Knorrox Chilli Beef stock cubes. Win!

The boerie was a bit pink, but was good-quality meat and not dry. The biggest letdown was the overcooked brisket, but the BraaiBox with chicken had a delicious mild marinade and the meat was cooked just right.

The burger was not a huge hit for me. Mainly because I am not a fan of mayo in anything other than a tuna or chicken mayo sandwich.

The Russian was spicy, salty and oily but delicious. All round, Chesanyama served the perfect slap chips – crispy outside and soft inside. The service was friendly and superfast, the food was fresh and the large portions are great value for money. –Gugulethu Mhlungu
