Gourmet food trucks are all the rage in Cape Town and Joburg. The #Trending team gives 5 Star Street Chef a go. We weren’t disappointed.

The evolution??of fast food?

The tender, sticky sweetness of the pork, coupled with the vinegary tang of the coleslaw and the soft, slightly sweet brioche bun around it, is the stuff fast food dreams are made of.

I don’t eat fast food because it tastes like cardboard smeared with mayonnaise, but the growing food-truck phenomenon means I can change my mind.

5 Star Street Chef, one of a number of food trucks that are fast becoming regulars at events around Joburg, ticks all the food boxes.

Their signature dish is the Thaiflavoured chicken burger.

It is scrumptious with all the fragrances of lime, lemongrass and chilli trapped inside on a freshly baked bun. The beef burger, packed with grilled onions, is also delicious.

Sure, you need a napkin to sop up the sauce, but then this is five-star fast food with actual attention to flavour detail – not a factory-farmed chicken or a cookie-cutter bun in sight. Finally, the evolution of fast food.

The pork?evangelist?

I have this lifelong mission to convert non-pig eaters into consumers of this marvellous animal. Part of my evangelisation involves telling them that the demonpossessed pigs referred to in the Bible ran into the lake and drowned. So they have no descendants.

The greater part of the evangelisation involves me sampling as great a variety of pork dishes as possible and raving about them to pig heathens. A friend and I even have a tradition of going on what we call “pig runs”.

When one discovers a good “pig spot”, he informs the other and we do the next visit together. This pig bond has kept us going for ages.

I was obviously very excited to find that one of the burgers I was to sample was a pork burger. Before I ploughed into it,I paused and salivated. My intention was to be gentle with it but, regrettably, it would not let me. As the cool people say: “It’s all that!”

I have informed my friend about the discovery and it will now form part of the arsenal in my evangelisation drive.

But where are?the chips??

5 Star Street Chef’s beef slider topped with mushroom pâté, cider-battered onion rings and onion marmalade was delicious.

Though I thought it looked a little small, it was a tasty treat that filled me instantly.

I liked that the sauce did not make the roll all soggy or mess on the table, like most burgers do. The roll itself was luscious, bar the edges, which were slightly burnt.

Their patties are very thick and juicy. On the downside, though, there were no chips alongside the mouth-watering slider. It is my humble opinion that a good burger goes hand in hand with hot chips. It’s like a groom and a bride.

Surely there’s a rule that says burgers shall be served with chips, especially for people like myself who have no care in the world about the science of eating? If there isn’t, there should be. More is more!

The people shall eat burgers, and I am the people.
