Taxi! We’re on the run

2012-10-12 16:27

Two suspected criminals were re-arrested in the Free State after hailing a taxi as a getaway vehicle before taking a house owner hostage.

Police spokesperson Constable Peter Kareli said the escapees managed to overpower the two prison warders who had accompanied them from the Sasolburg court to the prison today.

They then robbed the warders of their service pistols and hailed a taxi to Zamdela.

“On their way there they saw the blue lights of police vehicles and then got off the taxi quickly. They ran into the nearest house and took the owner of the house hostage,” said Kareli.

He said the police managed to free the hostage. Kareli said “in the process of arresting the suspects shots were fired” and one of the escapees sustained a bullet wound to his right thigh.
