Taxi driver gets five years for assaulting son

2013-08-08 10:25

A taxi driver was jailed for an effective five years for assaulting his 12-year-old son.

The 39-year-old man, whose identity was not disclosed to protect the identity of his son, was found guilty and sentenced in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the Pretoria News reported today.

The man was initially charged with abuse and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after his two sons, then six and nine, were found with “stripe marks” on their bodies in 2007.

The marks were discovered when an organisation visited the boys’ school to donate uniforms to poor pupils and fitted the younger sibling with a new shirt.

As a taxi driver, the father was tasked with transporting schoolchildren, the newspaper reported. After serving his jail term, the father would have to change his job, as his name would be placed on the National Child Protection Register, preventing him from providing child-related services.

The father was acquitted on a charge of assaulting his eldest son.

Magistrate Graham Travers suspended five years of the 10-year jail sentence handed down for five years.
