Taxi driver shot dead for ‘not paying R25 000’

2012-11-20 12:42

A taxi driver was shot dead in Vosloorus for allegedly not paying R25 000 for the taxi he had bought.

Albert Mkhombeni (38) was standing beside his taxi at the Vosloorus taxi rank this morning when a man walked past him, allegedly pulled out a 9mm pistol and shot him five times in the upper body, said Vosloorus police communication officer Captain Piet Rossouw.

The victim died on the scene.

A SAPS patrol car was patrolling the N3 freeway at the time when they heard the shots.

They saw a person running with a gun towards a white Toyota Conquest. The suspect climbed into passenger seat.

Police gave chase on the freeway and managed to pull the Toyota over.

As soon as they pulled over, the shooter attempted to escape. Police called for back-up and managed to arrest him as well as the driver of the Toyota.

The suspect showed police where he had hidden the pistol in the backseat of the car.

Police said the motive was unclear but one of the suspects said that the deceased had bought a taxi from him and still owed R25 000 but did not want to pay.

Police are investigating.
