Taxi operators strike over new rank

2012-01-13 16:15

Hundreds of commuters in Bloemfontein were stranded today when taxi operators went on strike.

Taxi operators have been complaining about the newly built taxi rank, which forms part of the Intermodel Transport Facility that has cost the Mangaung Metro approximately R400 million. Several taxi operators did not want to move to the new taxi rank when it was opened more than two months ago.

Operators complained that the entrance and exit lanes of the new rank were too small.

Construction on the taxi rank started in 2009. While construction was underway, operators were temporarily moved to an open space next to the Wesleyan Church in Waaihoek.

They were, however, moved back in time for the ANC centenary celebrations. Some of the main events took place at the church were the ANC was formed a century ago.

Representatives of several taxi associations were locked in a meeting with officials of the Mangaung Metro until late this afternoon. Qondile Khedama, spokesperson for the metro, said the municipality would release a statement on the situation later.
