Teacher fired after raping pupil

2012-08-10 09:09

A Johannesburg teacher has been fired after allegedly raping a pupil.

The man lured the 12-year-old girl to his car and drugged her before raping her, The Times reported today.

This was according to Wits law professor Bonita Meyersfeld, who told the story to pupils of Roedean School yesterday.

After the attack, the girl awoke near her home but did not report the matter.

In the following months she suffered nosebleeds and blackouts. After one blackout she was taken to hospital, where doctors discovered she had been raped.

The school allegedly promoted the child to the next grade and made her a prefect when the rape was discovered.

Meyersfeld, who is a director of Lawyers Against Abuse, said six lawyers took six months to help the child because police closed the case, as the rape was only reported months after the event.

After the intervention of Lawyers Against Abuse, the teacher was fired.

The non-governmental organisation offers legal help to rape survivors who cannot afford to hire lawyers.
