Teachers face multiple charges of abuse

2012-10-09 08:49

Provincial education departments are investigating several charges against dozens of teachers and headmasters, according to a report.

These include complaints of discrimination against people with HIV, corporal punishment, sexual misconduct with pupils, and nepotism, Afrikaans daily Beeld reported today.

The Gauteng education department has had to deal with 259 disciplinary hearings since April this year, of which 128 had been completed.

According to the department, 13 people had been fired this year, while another 35 were suspended pending investigation outcomes.

The department was also investigating 36 cases against school governing bodies, mainly involving allegations of power abuse, financial mismanagement, and incompetence.

The North West education department was investigating 46 teachers and headmasters, six administrative staff members and one office worker on charges including sexual misconduct, absenteeism, and maladministration.

In Limpopo, eight headmasters and four teachers were being investigated on similar charges.

Mpumalanga’s education department failed to respond to several inquiries from Beeld.
