Team SA: 400m hurdles preview

2011-08-30 07:47

Team South Africa’s 400m hurdles trio of LJ van Zyl, Cornel Fredericks and Wenda Theron will vie for final spots in their respective semifinals at Daegu Stadium in South Korea today.

Van Zyl and Fredericks posted impressive performances in the men’s heats on Day 3 of competition while Theron ran a personal best 56.13 in the women’s qualifiers, also yesterday.

While the men’s duo are experienced at the highest level, debutante Theron has taken to senior competition track like duck to water despite Daegu 2011 being her maiden participation in the senior worlds.

The 22-year-old Theron said yesterday that her objective was to attain a personal best and a semifinal spot.

With that having being ticked off her wish list, she also believe that she had overcame her fear.
“Usually, I stress a lot especially for this kind of races but this one was different,” she said prior to her return to track today.

How do you find the championships so far?

“The experience is much different when I compare it to the World Student Games (in China two weeks ago). This event is in the class of its own.

With today’s maximum temperature standing at 38 degrees, Theron said she fancies competing in such conditions.

“I usually prefer hot weather when I am running in the heat and China was much more humid and glad I get used to it in China.”

In the other major events tonight, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi’s title is likely to go to Kenya since the Berlin 2009 800m champion withdrew on the eve of the championships due a grade-one muscle tear in his hamstring.

David Rudisha is tipped to lift the crown to add to Kenya’s haul of two gold medals so far.

The East African nation is placed second in the medal table with Ethiopia and Botswana the other African countries – one gold apiece – featuring inside the top 10 bracket at Daegu this year.
