Tear gas used during protest at repatriation centre

2011-10-17 12:55

Tear gas was used to quell a protest by foreign nationals at a deportation centre near Krugersdorp today, the centre’s manager said.

George Masanabo, manager of the Lindela repatriation centre near Krugersdorp, said four beds were set alight during the protest and some pipes at the centre were damaged.

“We called the police to come and quell the situation.”

The protesters were demanding to be sent home immediately.

Masanabo said the cause of the protests at the facility, which houses 2 990 people, was believed to be frustration at the pace at which deportation cases were being handled.

“Foreigners were demanding to be deported (immediately), but we have our own internal processes,” said Masanabo.

It was not known whether any police officers or any of the foreign nationals were injured.

Masanabo said none of the centre’s staff were injured.
