When new cellphones are released these days, the level of excitement often seems to reach the same deafening buzz as that displayed during major sporting tournaments. So it’s a highly contested space. The latest in smartphone innovation comes from operating system creators Ubuntu.

The name may be familiar to South Africans – the founder of the company was the first African in space, Mark Shuttleworth.

When it comes to cellphones, Samsung and Apple are at the top of the food chain. But what we really want from a phone is a truly capable operating system. The top contenders in this regard have always been Android by Google and iOS by Apple.

Shuttleworth is now contending for the coveted third spot.

The company revealed two new Ubuntu-powered smartphones, the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition and Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain, this month.

There has been no news about a South African release, but the world’s first Ubuntu phone is available for sale all over Europe, direct from the manufacturer, BQ.

The Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition includes an 8 megapixel camera and dual-SIM functionality.
