Teen guilty of Griekwastad triple murders

2014-03-27 12:57

Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo today found a 17-year-old teenager guilty of the triple murders of the Steenkamp family.

The minor was found guilty of raping 14-year-old Marthella Steenkamp and then murdering her.

Kgomo said the teenager murdered the Steenkamp parents, Deon and Christelle, because they would bear witness to their daughter’s rape.

Kgomo said there was no unknown attacker on the farm on the night of the murders as the dogs would have barked.

Referring to the boy’s testimony that he was in the barn during the murders, Kgomo said this fact was important for the boy.

He said if the boy was not in the barn, he would have been in the house when the family was killed. He would have seen the attacker.

Otherwise he was in cahoots with the attacker or he pulled the trigger of the “smoking guns” that killed the family.

He was also found guilty of defeating the ends of justice by trying to pin the attack on a farm worker.

Kgomo started his judgment by indicating that the court sat as a children’s court. He said everything was done to give the boy a fair trial.

The boy was represented by experienced counsel and had pleaded not guilty, but did not disclose his defence.

The judge said the quiet town of Griekwastad was rocked on April 6 2012 when the boy arrived at the police station to report the murders.
