Teenager arrested for the murder of a Free State policewoman

A 19-year-old man had been arrested for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a policewoman in Bloemfontein, Free State police said today.

“Police worked around the clock and managed to arrest a suspect in connection with the murder. Police hope to arrest two more suspects in connection with the case soon,” said spokeswoman Colonel Annelie Wrensch.

The body of 36-year-old Amelia Henning was found next to Pasteur Drive in Bloemfontein by two schoolboys yesterday morning, she said.

“The deceased sustained several stab wounds to the chest and forensic evidence has confirmed that she had been raped.”

She said the policewoman was walking in the early hours of yesterday morning when she was allegedly overpowered by three suspects.

It was alleged that the motive for the attack was robbery. The suspects also “used the opportunity to rape and kill her”.

Henning was off duty and Wrensch said she did not want to speculate why she was walking alone in the area at the time of the attack.

The man will appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and rape.
