Teenager in court for school girl’s murder

An 18-year-old who allegedly killed a matriculant is expected to apply for bail when he appears in court again on January 14.

“He appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court yesterday and is due to reappear on January 14 for a formal bail application,” said Captain Mali Govender.

She said the man was arrested on Wednesday at his home in Lukwe Street in the Joza township in Grahamstown following intensive investigations.

The body of 18-year-old Zingisa Centwa was found lying outside a house in the location on the morning of December 23.

“It appeared that she had several traumas to her head, and her neck was broken,” Govender said.

A local resident apparently noticed a woman lying in his yard at about 9pm on December 22, but thought it was someone who was drunk as his house is not fenced.

“When he woke up at around 5am to go to his outside toilet, he saw Centwa’s body still lying there and phoned the police.

The police declared her dead on the scene.

It was established that Centwa was a matriculant at the Nombulelo High School in the area.

Police were told by family and friends that she was also one of the top students at her school following the release of matric results on Thursday.
