Tembisa calm ahead of MMC address

2011-09-20 12:46

Tembisa in Ekurhuleni, the scene of service delivery protests yesterday, was calm this morning ahead of an address to disgruntled residents by a member of the mayoral committee (MMC), Gauteng police said.

“No incidents have been reported this morning,” said Captain Pinky Tsinyane.

Municipal spokesperson Justice Mohale said MMC for water and electricity, Aubrey Nxumalo, was expected to clarify the municipality’s position on electricity provision for Tembisa and KwaThema residents.

Residents have reportedly rejected the installation of pre-paid electricity meters in their homes, saying the unit cost was too high.

Tsinyane said residents also expected to hear when they would get permission to hold a march to hand over a list of grievances to the municipality.

About 2 000 Tembisa residents protested over service delivery this morning. They barricaded roads and threw objects at police.

When the protesters refused to disperse, police fired rubber bullets. No one was injured and calm was restored by the afternoon.
