Tens of thousands vote ‘no’ to porn

2010-03-10 13:59

MORE than 41?000 people have voted no in a campaign against a new

pornographic channel on DStv, trade union Solidarity said today.

Solidarity’s Helping Hand campaign for No to Pornography-campaign

started in February. The trade union planned to hand over all protest messages

to DStv MultiChoice soon to indicate that some South Africans were opposed to

the idea.

Helping Hand spokesperson Lindie Strydom said Helping Hand would

also hand a report to the company on facts about pornography in South Africa.

These included studies that have shown that 77

%

of molesters of boys and 87% of molesters of girls used

pornography and acted out what they saw on their victims.

Helping Hand said “perversity” would also be encouraged by

pornography. Research had further shown it was not true that rape and

molestation decreased if pornography was freely available.

MultiChoice had indicated its own research on the issue was

finished and the results would be made public within the next two weeks.
