Thabiso Sekgala ‘a gentle, strong-willed soul’

2014-10-23 16:21

Thabiso Sekgala was a gentle soul who left an invaluable contribution to photography.

This is how friends, colleagues and family described the photographic artist who died last week.

In a moving but brief tribute, those who worked with Sekgala revealed how he affected them as friends, human beings and artists.

Friend and colleague Molemo Moiloa Gapare said Sekgala taught her one research tool she would never forget – chilling in the corner and connecting with the people.

Polite and assertive about his work and ideas is how friend and Goodman Gallery representative Mikhael Subotzky described Sekgala.

Close friend and fellow photographer Musa Nxumalo said when Sekgala visited communities he wouldn’t start his work without introducing himself as a person first, listen to the people, and understand and connect with them before taking pictures.

“In our conversations as friends I would ask him of the dangers of becoming attached to people’s problems as subjects and he would say ‘I am strong’ – indeed he was strong.”

Family spokesperson Vincent Ramaile said a closed funeral for the photographer was scheduled for Saturday at Sekgala’s home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

Ramaile said Sekgala was a gentle, humble, polite but strong-willed soul, who never took issue with people but solved problems through the art of gentle persuasion and a charming smile.
