‘The Iron Duke’ says sorry

2011-06-15 09:50

Orlando Pirates’ chairman Irvin Khoza today apologised to the Premier Soccer League and its sponsors for his club supporters’ misdemeanour – invading the pitch – last month.

Pirates were hauled before the league’s disciplinary committee for bringing the league into disrepute and were fined R150 000 of which R100 000 was suspended.

“The Iron Duke” said although the invasion was not of violent nature, they accept the sanction by the league.

“This cannot be condoned and allowed and we apologise for what happened,” he said, addressing members of the media at the league’s offices in Parktown, Johannesburg.

“As much as this was a category-A game, which the league was responsible for security, we will take this matter off-line.”

Meanwhile, Zola Majavu, the outgoing prosecutor for the league, said the matter involving Mamelodi Sundowns is currently before the Safa Appeals Board.

This was after the club was charged following misbehaviour by the supporters. But the Pretoria-based side decided to appeal the case.
