The NHI must cover us all

2011-08-13 16:04

When Ntando Maseko’s father-in-law needed a specialist and couldn’t foot the bill, he was sent home.

This is one of the reasons why Maseko (40), from Riverlea, Johannesburg, supports the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme.

“The NHI is a good idea since even people with health insurance are required to pop out more when they require the services of medical specialists,” Maseko says. When you cannot afford to pay for specialists you run the risk of dying.

“I remember when my father-in-law required a specialist and couldn’t foot the bill. It was sad when he was just sent home.

“Luckily he is still alive but did not recover entirely from his ailment,” he says.

Maseko, a branch manager at National Glass Distributors, pays R1 600 per month in medical aid fees for his wife and four kids, but not all their medical needs are covered.

“Our scheme is not excellent but just enough for us to survive. For more value I would have to pay over R3 000, which I can’t afford,” he says.

“I think it would be good if the  covered everybody – the amount I am paying is equal to other people’s salaries and they obviously cannot afford private healthcare.”

He suggests that the NHI should be funded through value added tax as he already contributes a lot in taxes.

“But deductions can’t come from our salaries as that would squeeze us more and be expensive.”
