Despite some brutal reviews over the past two seasons, The Simpsons has re-energised its 26th season with two new characters: a father and daughter from Nigeria.

While the notion of the pair being Nigerian royalty is a little stereotypical, it seems the writing team has done some solid work to make the show more cosmopolitan – and Princess Kemi, who falls in love with cranky bartender Moe, is a conduit for a new world of ideas and literature.

Featured in the show are works by great Nigerian writers Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Ben Okri.

There are definitely some teething issues and the writers would do well to steer away from typical ideas of African life and business – but we can give them a thumbs up for at least trying to incorporate African faces and achievers in the sea of whiteness that dominates the small screen.
