The day Parliament fell apart

2014-12-26 16:02

One of the most unforgettable moments of 2014 in Parliament was when riot police were called in to remove EFF MP Reneilwe Mashabela from the National Assembly during a late-night sitting on November 13.

In a build-up that scriptwriters would struggle to better, Mashabela accused President Jacob Zuma of being a thief – not once but 22 times.

This took place during a debate on a treaty on the Grand Inga Hydropower Project between SA and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Here is an unrevised Hansard transcript of the conversation between Honourable Members in the House that evening, including the pandemonium that erupted when the riot police were called in, leading to the house being adjourned at 11.06pm.

Parly highlight/lowpoint of the year
