The fabulous Feather Awards

2012-11-10 13:34

Androgyny was the order of the day at this year’s Feather Awards, which took place at The Venue at Melrose Arch on Wednesday night.

With just a R100 000 budget, it seems the flamboyant and colourful people sure know how to leave people yearning for more, at a small cost.

With the who’s who of celebville there, it was hard to keep track of what was happening, let alone stay glued to the awards.

It was entertaining to see Kenny Kunene living up to his Father Christmas ways of splurging on other people as he bought drinks for anyone and even offered people his Hennessy.

Looking gorgeous was Sonia Sedibe in black-and-gold attire, Bonang Matheba in a neon-orange dress and Zizo Beda, who wore a body-hugging tangerine knee-length dress. But the poor ladies had some stiff competition from the gay troops, who wore six-inch heels, piled on the make-up, and even went as far as wearing dresses and padding their “boobs”.

But it was their day, so we all played along.

Then there were those hotties lurking around, such as Scandal actor Brighton Ngoma and Calvin Christopher, who’s married to Kgomotso the Isidingo actress.

And how could I forget Lunga Shabalala? And yes, I did notice the two single boys being hit on by several women when they weren’t posing for pictures.

Also looking good was the Mazwai sisters Thandiswa, Ntsiki and Nomsa, who hung around together most of the time. I wish I had sisters like that.

The talk of the night was Kelly Khumalo, who jogged our memories when she took us back to her virgin days in a red number that had a slit right by her goodies, the same way she once did in those beaded skirts.

Then there was Tina Mkwaiwa, who rocked up on stage in a wheel chair with a leg in a cast.

I guess she really wanted to make that acceptance speech.

And sadly Camagwini again decided to unleash her Gagawini stunts, with a leather outfit filled with chains and studs, and those horrible peep-toe shoes. The highlight of the night was the performances, especially by former Dance Your Butt Off contestant Bujy Bikwa, who booty-hopped, jerked and twerked till he was dripping wet.

The downfall of the evening was the cash bar and the scarcity of nibbles, but it was on a tight budget, so we understood.

Above all, I love gay people, they make the world such a happy place.
