The legacy of leaders – Shaka Sisulu

2012-06-16 11:59

Founder of Cheesekids for Humanity foundation and recently an author of a biography titled “Becoming”, Shaka Sisulu gave an insight on the experience of growing up as part of the Sisulu family and the lessons learnt from it.

Born to parents who too were children to political leaders was no less different to any other child’s life for him.
“The first experience of understanding what my family was about was seeing my grandfathers face on a calender that had all of the Rivionia Trialists,”said Sisulu.

The only thing that seemed to be much different as he pointed out, was how it influenced him to work for a greater cause.

He values the pathology of a cause and knowing there is something worthwhile and just to fight for, which are things that have been passed down to him by his elders.

Shaka says for him the Sisulu name didnt bring any pressures when he realised its weight because he already experienced “a lifetime of dealing with my first name”.

In his book he relates how the events of life unfolded and helped shape his outlook on the state of the country.

“Every phase of my life has been something that always reminds me of the huge debt that my generation and our generation owes to the generations passed,” says Sisulu.
