The provinces? Durban, Cape Town ... umm

2011-10-31 10:41

If you thought South Africa’s national animal was the springbok, guess again, because a potential Miss SA thinks it’s the Big Five! Yes, you heard right, some of the contestants who were interviewed were nothing short of extras in the production of the film Dumb and Dumber.

And the viewers of Mzansi Magic channel had to witness it all on the show, The Road to Miss South Africa which showcases the audition phase of the local beauty pageant.

In the Joburg leg, contestant Palesa Smouse left the pageant judges Sonia Raciti-Oshry (former Miss SA), Talk Radio 702’s Kieno Kammies, designer Gert-Johan Coetzee and fashion consultant Paledi Segapo in stitches when she clearly didn’t know the national animal. After two wrong guesses, which were “the Big Five, an elephant and a monkey” and finally being given the right answer, the springbok, Smouse still maintained her cool, only saying: “Oh sorry, how could I forget that? That was such a blonde moment.”

Another Durban girl, Lwandle Ngwenya, introduced herself as a “smart law student”, but failed to name the nine provinces.

When presenter Bridget Khathi asked Ngwenya – “name the provinces of this country”, she was quick to say “Joburg and Cape Town and?.?.?.” but was stopped dead in her tracks by Khathi who had to tell her “those are cities, not provinces”.

But when Kyro Ward referred to the late and former defence minister Magnus Malan as a woman the judges cringed.

This was after Nelisa Nkala, East Coast Radio DJ and KwaZulu-Natal judge, asked her what legacy Malan had left for SA.

And the toughest question from all the auditions seemed to be: “Who is the deputy president of South Africa?” A few got it right, but most of the contestants mumbled the answer and some were indeed very honest, saying: “I don’t know!”

But there is hope because pageant organiser Sue Klerck confirmed that they have made plans to ensure that the ladies are not as intellectually challenged during the Miss SA finals on December 11.

She said: “As opposed to the girl lying, we accept that the girls don’t know. But judge them by how they respond to not knowing the answer.”
