The weird world of politics: A dressing-down

A dressing-down

Eish, this race thing is overplayed sometimes.

When speaker of the Mpumalanga legislature Thandi Shongwe could not justify why she had a problem with the dress worn by DA MPL Jane Sithole last week, she accused another DA MPL of being white.

Sithole’s DA colleague, Anthony Benadie, had risen to insist she was dressed formally and appropriately.

But Shongwe stuck to her guns.

“Your definition of formal is different to mine because mina ngiwumuntu [I’m black] and wena ungumlungu [you’re white],” Shongwe argued.

Aowa bathong!

Top of his game

South Africa, there is no need to panic. President Jacob Zuma is on top of things.

According to a flurry of statements issued by presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj in the past week, Zuma “has been kept fully briefed about the developments at Eskom”, “has been assured” by the ministers of justice and police “they are attending to matters relating to the NPA and the Hawks” and “has noted the issues in the public domain in relation to the appointment and removal of SABC board members”.

So everybody, just chill.

Slapdash speech

There was incredulity in March 2013 when the ANC appointed 81-year-old Benson Fihla as Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality mayor.

The ANC assured us Fihla would stabilise the metro after bitter internal factional battles there. But “ageists” were laughing this week.

The Herald newspaper reported that, while reading his speech this week, Fihla – who was supposed to announce an interim replacement for a sacked councillor – read out: “I am now appointing dash dash as a caretaker portfolio chairperson.”

Fihla’s speechwriters, unsure of the name, had put in “– –”.
