Matric licence?

Presumably, if a journalist had to be licensed to work in South Africa, there would be some minimum qualification necessary.

This question follows comments by the forever-acting SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng that journalists, like lawyers, should be licensed and the licence should be withdrawn if they acted unprofessionally.

So the obvious question for Motsoeneng, who was found to have misled the SABC about having a matric qualification is: Does he think he could have ever cracked it as a journalist for Lesedi FM with his Grade 11?

Insults show

While many of us have been entranced by the comical show in Parliament, we have missed some entertainment elsewhere. The Cosatu sideshow is back in town, folks.

The union federation’s general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, this week thanked Numsa members from saving him from hyenas and lions when he was suspended.

This is a likely reference to the proZuma comrades in Cosatu. The sting was felt by NUM general secretary Frans Baleni, who objected to the word. He then proceeded to call Julius Malema “little Hitler”.

It wasn’t us

Numsa members have been on a destructive rampage this week. But it is clear that while Numsa has allowed this violence to escalate, they are afraid of the consequences, such as getting sued for damage to property.

How else does one explain the union’s leader Irvin Jim’s strange statements that actually the people behind the violence are not Numsa members but agent provocateurs from the SACP and ANC?

“When we give out T-shirts, we don’t ask for people at the strike place to show their membership cards,” said Jim. Does he really expect us to believe this?
