The name game

President Jacob “the one who grinds you while laughing with you” Zuma may seem like he’s fudging over issues by responding to three lengthy reports in 20 pages.

But in reality, he pays great attention to detail. For instance, after a lengthy debate on what it really should be called without causing too much offence, he refers to his home as the Nkandla Residence Complex or NRC for short.

That’s settled, then. It’s not a homestead nor a compound.

The SABC must love him too?–?it can continue to quote the man directly without causing offence.

Out of step

Minister of Women in the Presidency Susan Shabangu this week spoke about her participation in the historic 1956 women’s march to the Union Buildings as a baby.

Then she got her history badly muddled and the apartheid leaders mixed up. She said the women were protesting against prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd.

If she had not been an infant, she would have heard the women chant “Strijdom, wathint’ abafazi, wathint’ imbokodo” in reference to prime minister JG Strijdom. Verwoerd took charge two years later.

A babe in arms

The DA’s wet-behind-the-ears shadow minister of defence and military veterans, David Maynier, assumed without a shadow of a doubt that he would rattle the Seriti Commission of Inquiry with his supposedly explosive evidence when he made an appearance. But alas, it was not to be.

Maynier was given a hard time by Judge Willie Seriti, who did not have any patience for Maynier’s attempts at political posturing, dismissing much of his grandstanding and showing the MP that much of what was before the arms commission took place way before his time.
