The winter make-over

2010-05-02 10:42

Wall colours

Pick a bright yellow or lime colour

for the kitchen, any warm ‘edible’ paint such as cherry red for the dining room

and pair soothing shades such as turquoise with grounding chocolate browns for

the bedrooms.

Flooring

If

you have enough to go on an overhaul spree for your house, consider swapping to

wooden flooring which is still very popular.

Items such as over-sized parquet

flooring and pressed bamboo are making a big impression.

Décor expert Juliet

Newell says these work for all seasons and score high points for versatility.

Don’t be shy to add colourful rugs too, but avoid Persian rugs!

Fabrics

These are a great way to freshen up

an interior, but could prove expensive. Newell advises that you work with what

you have as long as the base is neutral.

Simple tricks such as adding new

scatter cushions and upholstering an ottoman or side chair can help you achieve

a fresh new look and feel.

Laureen Rossouw, editor of Elle Decoration magazine,

adds that natural fibres and textured pieces add warmth for winter and should

be used for layering over beds and couches.

Mohair is making a big comeback!

Lamps and shades

Crochet and knits are being used in

new ways, even for lamp shades. Wooden lamp stands are also still one of the

most popular materials of choice for designers and they transcend seasons.

Pair

a classic wooden lamp stand with a knitted cover to get a different effect.

Artwork

If

you are not too sure about changing your living space too much, paintings and crafted

material are a fun way to add colour into any room.

Consider getting a bright

colour piece for the living room or the kitchen to lighten up the mood when the

fire place is churning out some heat during the cold.
