The year in film

2011-12-23 12:12

1 BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL
True Grit – Ethan and Joel Coen did the John Wayne classic justice – so much so, well, it’s better. And Jeff Bridges wore the eye patch with aplomb.

2 MOST UNDER-RATED LOCAL FLICK
Paradise Stop – This Raps and Kenny film deserved to do so much better.

It took the crime caper local and did a much better job than many Hollywood studios.

3 CROSS-DRESSING HORROR
Big Momma’s House 3 – Somebody, anybody please lock Martin Lawrence up before he puts on another fat suit and frock.

This third instalment in the franchise has left me scarred. I shudder whenever I see an oversized floral dress.

4 WORST R-PATS MOVIE
Water For Elephants – Bizarrely, the worst film I saw Robert Pattinson in this year wasn’t the fourth Twilight film; it was this awful period romance.

Poor Reese Witherspoon had to pretend to have the hots for Pattinson and both of them were upstaged by the elephant.

5 BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE
Thor – Australian Chris Hemsworth wielded his hammer with absolute authority. Though it is a toss up with that other superhero of the year, Captain America. It was a good year for fans of comic book heroes.

6 BIGGEST LOCAL LET DOWN
Jock of the Bushveld – Eek! This animated version of one of South Africa’s best-loved bushveld stories was a dud.

The animation was terrible and when you are going up against Pixar and Disney, that’s a mortal sin.

7 FEEL-GOOD FLICK
The First Grader – This story of a former Mau-Mau warrior who decides to take the government up on their offer of free schooling is a delight. British director Justin Cartwright gets it just right and the supporting cast is all proudly South African.

8 BEST CREATURE FEATURE
Rise of the Planet of the Apes – This futuristic sci-fi film shot to the top of the box-office and raked in millions and millions.

The film is a prequel to Tim Burton’s disastrous remake of the Charlton Heston classic. Thankfully, the next instalment will be with us next year.

9 ROMCOM OF THE YEAR
Crazy Stupid Love – This sweet love story was one of my favourites of the year. The storyline doesn’t shy away from sentimentality but rather uses it to make the audience buy into true love. It’ll surely be going onto the favourites shelf at home.

10 BEST LITERARY ADAPTATION
The latest version of Charlotte Bronte’s classic Jane Eyre captures this gothic love story in all its timeless splendour. It features Michael Fassbender as the brooding Mr Rochester and 22-year-old Australian, Mia Wasikowska, as Jane.

11 END OF AN ERA
We have been watching Harry Potter films for a decade now and this year the franchise ended in a spectacular finale. Harry, Ron and Hermione waved goodbye to their adolescence, which all of us watched them survive – along with dragons, a basilisk and all manner of other magical creatures.
