Three music legends to hit the right note in Jozi

2011-09-30 10:30

Three Zimbabwean giants are set to take to the stage for a music event unlike any other next week. Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi and Chiwoniso Maraire will form part of the ZIM*ZA Music Festival on Sunday at the Ellis Park Arena
in downtown Joburg.

Considering the huge number of Zimbabwean expatriates in Jozi, this concert will surely ring a sweet note for homesick music lovers.

The concert is also set to introduce Chimurenga music (Zimbabwean struggle music) to a younger audience.

The reigning king of this Zimbabwean popular music genre, legendary Thomas Mapfumo (66), has been in exile since 2004 and will be bringing along his band, The Blacks Unlimited.

In 1980, in the capital Harare, Mapfumo and his band shared the stage with another legendary band – Bob Marley and the Wailers (1963-1981).

It was during the occasion of Robert Mugabe’s election as president after the African nation’s bitter war for independence from coloniser Britain.

Mtukudzi (59), who is no stranger to South African music lovers, will be performing with his band, The Black Spirits.

Maraire (35), though not as popular in SA, has been hailed as the master of Zimbabwean mbira music.

The singer/songwriter is the daughter of famed mbira king Dumisani Maraire.
