2011-10-03 09:03

Three children and six teachers were killed when a school bus collided with a truck and a van this morning outside Harrismith, Free State police said.

“Nine people died – three children and six teachers,” said Sergeant Mmako Mophiring.

The bus was travelling from Spruitview in Gauteng to Durban.

Another 48 people, including the drivers of the truck and the van, were injured.

“At about 12:45am the bus was on its way to Kwazulu-Natal transporting school children and teachers on the N3,” said Mophiring.

“Just outside Harrismith the bus collided with the truck that was travelling on the opposite direction from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng transporting coal. It also collided again with the van.”

Ten people were critically injured and 38 suffered less serious injuries.

“The truck driver is critical and the van driver sustained minor injuries.”

The ages of the children were not yet known and it was not known which school they were from.

Last month, nine teachers were killed in a crash between a taxi and a bakkie outside Zeerust in the North West.
