Thumbs up for Sunshine Province’s first strip club

Mpumalanga could well be the place to be this festive season – not because of its breathtaking scenery or the Big Five in the Kruger National Park.

The “land of the rising sun” is venturing into another kind of tourist attraction.

Next Tuesday, on November 13, the sleepy town of Nelspruit will unveil the province’s first strip club.

Named Tango Blue, the adult entertainment venue’s grand opening was delayed by six months due to permit applications with the Mbombela Municipality.

“We struggled a long time to get all the licences in place. It was a difficult process. We had to rezone the place for adult entertainment and that took us two years,” said Tango Blue’s spokesperson, Cerine Olivier.

“Exactly a year back we started licence and liquor applications.

All the relevant officials were here and we were told to ensure that there were things like paraplegic toilets and designated smoking areas.

“It was the first time they had to licence a place like this so they had to be careful that it was not a brothel.”

Carried out amid a flurry of informal complaints by conservative residents who complained in the local media, the upheaval did not, however, dampen the owners’ spirits or prevent them from pursuing their plans for the entertainment spot.

This week, the club’s white building – huddled in an industrial area along the R40 between Nelspruit and White River – was abuzz with workers scuttling up and down, and making final touches.

There are private booths for individuals to enjoy lap dances, while VIPs will sneak in through a back door.

Olivier hopes the new joint will attract patrons from neighbouring Mozambique and Swaziland, as well as local patrons.
