Thumbs up for WC opening ceremony

2010-06-11 17:34

The 2010 Fifa World Cup opening ceremony “went beyond nation

building; it placed us well up-to-date internationally”, said big-time theatre

director Janice Honeyman.

She spoke to the City Press after the 2010 Fifa World Cup was

declared officially open by President Jacob Zuma and Fifa president Sepp

Blatter.

Honeyman, who recently directed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Boys in

the Photograph, said it was the “simplicity of the ceremony’s design” that gave

it its impact.

“It was such a fantastic show of our nation-building enthusiasm,

and it finally moved us out of the isolation of apartheid.”

She added that the decision to use the symbol of the baobab tree,

made up of international flags, was fantastic. “That tree has such magical and

spiritual qualities, especially added to that wonderful African map ... it was

aesthetically wonderful.”

Sue Klerck, the marketing executive at Sun International, known for

her work on the Miss South Africa beauty pageant said “the event surpassed

everyone’s expectations”.

Klerck went on to congratulate the organisers of the ceremony, Lebo

M’s Till Dawn Entertainment, for an “outstanding production”. Lebo M, the gifted

composer-producer from Soweto is remembered most for his involvement with

Disney’s The Lion King.

Klerck said, given the size of the World Cup opening ceremony, “the

number of people involved, the sequences to direct, I wouldn’t like to be the

production manager”.

She added that “they must have gone through hell” to get it right

and described the experience as “spine-tingling”.
