‘Tik tourist’ struggles to get passport back

A British tourist is struggling to get his passport back from the Home Affairs after he was arrested when police mistook the bath salts he was carrying for “tik”.

Peter Parnell (34) was absolved of wrongdoing by the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court nearly a week ago.

He was arrested on February 29 when police thought he was carrying 9.5kg of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “tik”.

David Mbuzwana, Parnell’s lawyer, told Beeld newspaper that tests conducted on the substance found in Parnell’s possession confirmed it was bath salts.

The Home Affairs had Parnell rearrested on Friday, and requested a warrant to deport him. This was turned down, as Parnell had proof he intended leaving the country tomorrow.

“Since Monday, however, Home Affairs has refused to return my passport,” Parnell told the newspaper.

According to him, the department wanted him to sign a form stating he was forced to leave the country. “I want to go home. They don’t have to force me.”
