Time to say what you think of us

As one of the biggest media scandals of our time was unfolding north of the Atlantic, local media houses hoisted a huge mirror this week into which we will be staring for the next eight months.

The Press Freedom Commission (PFC) was launched on Thursday amid calls from the ANC for the establishment of a statutory media appeals tribunal that will regulate the press. Self-regulation doesn’t work, the governing party says.

Judge Pius Langa and his team of independent commissioners – the media is not represented on the PFC – will spend the next eight months investigating international best models of regulation. They will listen to submissions from any party, organisation or individual and produce a report that will inform this crucial and robust debate.

For the PFC to succeed, a diversity of voices should be heard, including that of the ANC and supporters of statutory regulation.

We trust that the sorry outburst by ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu after the launch of the PFC, calling Langa and his team the “playboys” of print media, will not deter anyone from participating in this vital and exciting exercise to strengthen and improve the quality of our journalism.

For more information contact the commission’s researcher, Prinola Govenden, on 072 708 1320.
