Tips to keep it local

2011-12-03 16:51

The Homecoming Revolution movement to bring home-skilled South Africans from abroad has some great Christmas gift tips to help your local economy:

» Buy South African products – the job you save might be your own.

» A gift certificate for your mom from the local hair salon or barber.

» The services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

» A valet for your dad’s car at the local-owned car wash.

» An oil change for his car, truck or motorbike at the local mechanic.

» Gym membership to the local gym.

» Some DIY-gifts: fix a driveway, waterproof and paint a roof, or mow the lawn for the summer.

» Gift certificate for half a dozen breakfasts: not at the big national chains but at your town’s local
breakfast joint.

» Upgrading a computer with a young guy who just set up his repair business.

» Local crafts from your area.

» Tickets to a play or a ballet at your town theatre.

» Tickets to a performance featuring local bands.

» Eat out at local, owner-operated restaurants and leave your waiter a nice tip.

» Instead of wasting R50 on more Chinese Christmas lights, leave the mail-man, trash guy, newspaper
delivery guy or baby-sitter a nice,
big tip.
