Titans primed for Knights assault

Getting to the top is much easier than staying there.

That is the challenge the Titans face as they start their Sunfoil Series title defence against the Knights in Kimberley on Thursday.

They have opened a new page with the installation of Henry Davids as captain, replacing the long-serving Martin van Jaarsveld.

Davids said maintaining their high standards from last season will not be easy, but it is a task they have to warm up to.

“We’ve worked really hard in the off-season and we want to maintain what happened in the past but this is a different year,” he said.

“We are not going out there to defend the series. We are going out there to win the the trophy.”

With the Champions League T20 looming, Davids said that splitting attention between the four-day competition and the the shortest format will not be easy.

The Titans have selected two spinners for the De Beers Diamond Oval clash and Davids said the selection was based on the unpredictable nature of the ground.

“We don’t really know what to expect in Kimberley. Sometimes in the past we’ve played on green pitches and sometimes we’ve played on turners,” Davids said.

“We have enough back-up in the seam department and we also have enough back-up in the spin department.”

The Knights were the first side to take points away from the Titans, albeit in Pretoria.

Coach Matthew Maynard, who is back for a second spell, said he was aware of the dangers of a slow start, but said it was better that he had a side that did well at the business end of the season.

“It is all about how well you play in the last third of the season in all trophies. It was not a good start but the players were getting used to me,” he said.

“I would rather start a little under-cooked than ready and then get overdone in the business end of the season. We are in a similar position but I think we are match-shy.”

Titans’ squad: Tumelo Bodibe, Henry David (Captain), CJ de Villiers, Paul Harris, Heino Kuhn, Pieter Malan, Ethy Mbhalati, Rowan Richards, Jacques Rudolph, Roelof van der Merwe, Shaun von Berg, David Wiese
