Titans secure home eliminator

2012-03-22 11:38

The Titans have won the right to host the MiWayT20 challenge qualifier.

They beat the Warriors by eight wickets at their home ground SuperSport Park in Centurion yesterday.

Asked to chase down a Duckworth/Lewis-revised target of 60 in 11 overs after a rain delay, the Titans reached their target in 7.5 overs instead of 8.4, thereby securing the all-important bonus point.

The Warriors scored 64/6 in 13.1 overs before the rain halted proceedings. They will now face the Knights on Sunday and the winner will square off against the Lions at the Wanderers on April 1.

The visitors did not make life easy for the Titans, with Juan Theron trapping Henry Davids for one in front in the first over.

However, Titans’ captain Martin van Jaarsveld, who opened the bat with Davids, took it upon himself to secure his team the home eliminator when he belted Makhaya Ntini for six and four off consecutive fours.

Van Jaarsveld (23) added another boundary off Theron before he was bowled by off-spinner Johan Botha.

The home side became anxious with plenty of plays and misses, with Farhaan Behardien clipping one over the slip cordon for four.

Faf du Plessis (22 not out), who had smeared Simon Harmer to cow corner for four, sneaked one between wicketkeeper Athi Dyili and first slip-off Wayne Parnell to ensure the Titans would take the bonus point before Behardien (13 not out) put the result beyond doubt.

The Warriors, who have fared poorly in this season’s tournament, won the toss and chose to have first use of what looked like a good batting deck. Openers Parnell (23) and Ashwell Prince (10) started slowly, but the former clubbed off-spinner Eden Links to the midwicket boundary to get the ball rolling.

Parnell was the more aggressive of the two, cutting Alfonso Thomas past point for four and taking 12 off Links’s second over, which included a six over long-on and a swept four past fine leg.

His pyrotechnics came to an end when he skied seamer Ethy Mbhalati to Thomas at mid-off.

Prince followed soon after when he tamely chipped to Albie Morkel at mid-off off Thomas (2/110). A 36/2 became 38/3 when Warriors captain Davy Jacobs (0) guided a Thomas delivery to Van Jaarsveld at first slip.

The visitors were allowed no respite by the Titans, with only a boundary coming between the sixth and the eighth over.

Morkel (2/4) stamped his authority on the game when he trapped Colin Ingram in front for five and castling Botha (7) three balls later.

Craig Thyssen (3) also did not last long as he was caught behind by Heino Kuhn off left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe.

Harmer (9) took two boundaries off Van der Merwe before the rain came down.
