Former SA Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni has been appointed a non-executive director on Discovery’s board, the financial services company has said.

In an academic, political and business career spanning three decades, Mboweni had gained expertise in fields such as economic and political analysis, finance, labour relations, and public policy, spokesman Duke Malan said in a statement today.

Mboweni served as labour minister in South Africa’s first post-apartheid government from 1994 to 1998, and as SARB governor from 1999 to 2009.

The Discovery appointment was effective from January 1, 2014.

“I am extremely delighted and honoured to have been asked to be involved in the future direction and leadership of Discovery,” Mboweni said in the statement.

CEO Adrian Gore said: “As the Discovery leadership team, we hugely appreciate the value of active debates, viewpoints and ideas, invaluable dynamics to strong leadership and continued business success.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Mr Mboweni to Discovery and will undoubtedly learn and benefit much from his leadership and knowledge.”

Mboweni currently serves as chairman on the boards of Nampak Limited, AngloGold Ashanti, Accelerate Property Fund, and SasOil.

He is an international adviser to investment bank Goldman Sachs and holds degrees from various universities in South Africa and overseas.
