Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will reveal tomorrow whether she has uncovered any truth behind allegations of maladministration and corruption by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The investigation relates to the procurement of a multimillion-rand lease for the commission’s new headquarters.

Madonsela has been heavily criticised by opposition parties, which have suggested the investigation was dragging out and asked whether Madonsela was being selective in probing her close friend, IEC boss Advocate Pansy Tlakula.

United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa filed a complaint against the commission last year relating to the R320 million lease for the Riverside Office Park in Centurion, in which Parliament’s finance portfolio committee chairperson Thaba Mufamadi’s company, Manaka Property Investment, has a stake.

Madonsela has already released a preliminary report based on her investigation, but it’s unclear how she has ruled on the matter.

City Press has learnt that the IEC made substantive representations to the Public Protector after the latter released her preliminary report.

Madonsela’s office says the report into the investigation was a result of new information that came to light and had to be tested before a final report could be issued. Tlakula herself complained about delays in the investigation and wanted the matter finalised to clear the commission’s name.

Madonsela has denied protecting Tlakula in the IEC probe and insisted that she would not have probed the IEC if she was protecting Tlakula.

Tlakula said she would respond to the outcome of the report tomorrow.
