To my darling, love of my life

2012-09-07 15:31

I’ve known you for most of my life. We’re both children of the 1980s. And although I didn’t know it then, I was born to love you.

I didn’t take note of you until the end of high school.

I developed the biggest crush as I watched Takumi Fujiwara race you down the touges of Mount Akina in the Initial D anime based on the manga series from the late 1990s.

They used to call you Hachi-Roku, Japanese for 86 based on your model code.

Since then, you’ve had a special place in my heart.

Even though there have been other cars in my life, you have remained special.

Three years ago, I rediscovered you online and my heart skipped a beat. Your name has changed from FT-86 and you now go by as GT-86 in Europe.

You evolved from the Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT (AE86) in 1983 into everything I’ve always wanted.

And when I finally set eyes on you across the vast floor of the Johannesburg International Motor Show last year, I believed in love at first sight all over again.

Your masculine looks make me weak at the knees, the sharp lines that curved into the perfect form resembling an Adonis.

I blushed when I got inside you for the first time. Your sporty seats hugged my body.

Others said you didn’t quite make them feel as comfortable, but you and I were a perfect fit.

My hands wrapped around your three-spoked leather steering wheel with paddle shifts and as I pushed your start button, shivers of delight ran down my spine. You connected with my soul.

Those feelings intensified when you came to spend the week with me. You came in your highest specification – the High six-speed automatic model.

I wanted time to stand still as I woke up and went to bed with a smile on my face, knowing you were right outside resting on your 17-inch alloy wheels. I was the happiest I’ve ever been.

Even while I worked, I found myself making several trips to the window just to see you crouched in the parking lot among the ordinary machines. My heart raced every time you took me for a long romantic drive.

On the road you’re a gentle lover, every move I made on the wheel you matched in harmony.

You handled my mood swings like none before you ever could. You tamed my existence as you took me through the tightest bends.

You’re not boisterous in your tone, nor do you roar rudely every time we raced down the road like other sporty cars. Even though you have a Subaru Boxer engine, the tender grunt coming from the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated unit and through your dual tail pipes was enough to constantly make my knees go weak. I never wanted it to end. You were made for driving pleasure and to drift circles around my core.

“Dre” Ellis (played by Taye Diggs) said it best in the movie Brown Sugar: “Simplicity provides a fine line between elegance and plainness.” And that’s what draws me to you.

Although we can’t be together right now, I find solace knowing that I’ve met my soul mate.

Since you’ve left, I’ve been listening to Mariah Carey’s words as they ring so true: “When you left I lost a part of me It’s still so hard to believeCome back baby, please‘Cause we belong together.”
